Local Access Forum

The Local Access Forum is appointed by the Council in accordance with the Countryside & Rights of Way Act 2000. It's role is to give advice to the Council on how to improve access to public rights of way, the countryside and other green spaces so that they can be fully enjoyed and valued by the public, whether local residents or visitors to the area.

As the appointing authority the Council must have due regard to any relevant advice given by the Forum, as must other bodies such as government departments, Natural England, the Forestry Commission, English Heritage, Sport England and Town or Parish Councils. In giving their advice to any of these bodies the Forum must consider the needs of land management, conserving the natural beauty of the area and any guidance given by the Secretary of State for the Environment.

Membership of the Redcar & Cleveland Local Access Forum is voluntary and open to local people with relevant interest or experience, whether professional or voluntary. This might be as a public rights of way user (i.e. walker, cyclist or horse rider) as a landowner or manager or another appropriate area, such as promoting local heritage, visitor and tourism related business, health promotion or sustainable transport.

There are three meetings a year and these are usually held in the Council's Offices at Belmont House, Rectory Lane, Guisborough TS14 7FD on the third Thursday of January, May and September. Meetings are open to the public and normally last about two hours.

If you would like further information or advice about the work of the Local Access Forum or if you have an interest or experience in any of the areas mentioned above and might like to be involved please contact the Council's Public Rights of Way Advisor.
