Dog Warden

Through the Dog Warden service you are able to report lost or found dogs.

Stray Dogs

If you have found a stray dog, you must report it to our Dog Warden service. The dog cannot be sold or given to anybody else, neither can it be kept on a permanent basis (all reasonable attempts must be made to find the owner).

When you report a stray dog, you must provide the details of where you found it, when it was found, details of breed, colour and any distinguishing features or markings. This will assist us in reuniting the dog with its owner if reported missing.

If you notice that a dog is regularly straying, you can also report this to the Dog Warden service and we will patrol the area. Please give as much information together with location and time(s).

Missing Dogs

If your dog has gone missing, report this to us as soon as possible. This will assist us in checking our record to see whether it has been reported as found and reuniting you with your dog. When reporting your dog as missing, please provide us with details, as below:

  • Date, time and location lost
  • Breed of dog
  • Name
  • Gender
  • Colour
  • Distinguishing features and markings
  • Whether the dog is micro-chipped/tag information.
If you suspect that your dog has been stolen, must act quickly and report this to the police by calling 101. Also notify rescue centres, dog pounds, veterinary surgeries and advertise on social media and/or through local newspapers.

Dangerous Dogs

There are four breeds of dog that are banned in the UK:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Braziliero
It's also against the law to:

  • Sell a banned dog
  • Abandon a banned dog
  • Give away a banned dog
  • Breed from a banned dog

The Council offer a micro-chipping service for dogs over 12 weeks old, dependent on breed. For more information, contact the Dog Warden service.

Responsible Ownership

When out in a public place, your dog should always wear a collar and tag, even if it is micro-chipped.
