Thousands are expected to attend a major street festival for children, young people and families in Redcar next week.
The Between the Tides Festival is returning on Saturday 24 August and Sunday 25 August after last year’s inaugural event was a huge success.
The free weekend of adventure and exploration for children and their grown-ups will transform the town into an exciting spectacle of theatre, puppetry, circus, dance, storytelling and live music.
Redcar will welcome a colourful cast of characters with pop up performances from nationally renowned outdoor arts companies. Highlights include the chance to:
- meet 2FaceDance’s Fish Boy and join him on his fin-tastic quest to save his river;
- soar through magical kingdoms and imaginery dreamworlds on Studio GoGo’s thrilling Virtual Reality Swings;
- step inside Talking Bird’s giant silver whale to experience a fun, immersive show for intrepid sailors of all ages. Prepare to dive! Relaxed, family-friendly and ramp accessible;
- watch heartwarming stories of friendship and home in Puppet A La Carte’s The Story of the Scary Noise;
- join beach workshops and learn how to create sensational sandcastles for our Between the Tides competition;
- say hello to Hikapee and their giant revolving parasol for a day at the beach unlike any other in a high energy, outdoor circus theatre show;
- visit the Actual Reality Arcade - a life sized interactive game zone for all ages inspired by classic retro games. Audiences can take on the challenge using their minds, their bodies and their imaginations;
- cheer on the unlikely hero Wilford in SEED – a wild and anarchic visual and movement based outdoor theatre by Pif-Paf that looks at our relationship with the long suffering plants that keep us fed, sheltered and breathing;
- experience sea monster mayhem around Coatham Boating Lake Park with amazing puppets, storytelling and entertainment;
- marvel at the talent of local young musicians and singers on our live stage;
- tuck into tasty street food and treats at a Pick ‘N’ Mix market.
Architects of Air will also return with another Luminarium lights display installation in the grounds of Kirkleatham Museum. This will be a different structure than last year’s so visitors will be welcome to return for another amazing wander through a magical labyrinth of saturated light tunnels. Open Thursday 22 to Sunday 24 August, all pre sale tickets have sold out but we do have walk up tickets available for each day available at Kirkleatham Museum shop.
Cllr Carrie Richardson, Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture, said: “It’s going to be a whole lot of fun and the programme is even more packed that last year - which I thought was impossible! There are some positive messages in some of the shows about how we interact with the sea, river and environment and I know our superb businesses in Redcar are preparing for a bumper weekend. It’s lovely, fun summer event for children, young people and families at the seaside – come on down!”
