Works to expand Eston cemetery, which has reached its full capacity, will start in early 2024.
In order to create the necessary additional grave space, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council will extend the cemetery boundary, with works due to start in the coming days.
To make this extension possible, the boundary fence, separating the cemetery from adjacent land, which runs along the cremated remains plot, will need to be removed. The fence will be replaced with boxed hedging – with planting to be completed in the upcoming months – which will improve the landscaping of the area.
Works will be undertaken carefully and respectfully with minimum disturbance to ensure that improvements will be completed safely and seamlessly.
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Cllr Adam Brook, said: “Cemeteries have a significant importance to our communities. They are a place where we can visit our loved ones and pay our respects whilst keeping their memory alive. With my personal connection to Eston cemetery, I understand and know how important it is to residents to have that choice to be interred in their hometown. Eston cemetery has now reached its full capacity, its extension is necessary, and we want to reassure families that all works will be done in a respectful, safe and non-disruptive manner.”
