Council Tax property exemptions
Apply for a Council Tax property exemption at Property exemption application.
Some properties are exempt from Council Tax, this means that you don’t need to pay Council Tax on the property. Either all residents are disregarded, or the property is exempt.
There are several reasons why a property may be exempt from Council Tax, these include:
- The property has been left empty by someone who has been detained, for example in prison
- The former resident is now in a care home or hospital
- The former resident has died
- You’re not allowed to live in the property by law, for example a planning condition prevents you living there
- The property is held for the occupation of a minister of religion.
- The former resident has gone to live with someone else to receive care leaving their own property empty
- The former resident has gone to live elsewhere to provide care leaving their own property empty
- The property is empty because a mortgage provider has taken possession
- The property is empty, and the liable resident has been made bankrupt
- An unoccupied caravan pitch mooring
- The property is occupied only by a person or persons aged under 18
- An unoccupied annex to an occupied property
- The property is the main residence of a diplomat
- An annex which is occupied by a dependant relative aged over 65 who is either severely mental impaired or disabled
- The property is solely occupied by members of the visiting forces
- The property is solely occupied by those certified severely mentally impaired
- The property is solely occupied by full-time students
