Care home residents work 'Together in Music' with professional musicians for a special Jubilee performance

The Council in partnership with Orchestra Live and Manchester Camerata have organised an exciting project, named Together in Music, meant to support the wellbeing of residents from care settings through creative music making.

By the end of the programme, the participants created an original music piece entitled “The Woman of Our Time" in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee year, which will be performed by the Guisborough Choral Society, who has 60 years of existence and performs around 2-3 concerts every year.

Over the past 6 months, four care homes in Redcar and Cleveland, Primrose Court Care Home, Astune Rise Care Home, Shoreline Nursing Home and Sandbanks, have been visited by Manchester Camerata composer/percussionist Janet Fulton and clarinettist Lynne Fell.

The two musicians held a series of creative music making workshops attended by the residents which combined music therapy elements with musical improvisation which allowed them to socialise as part of group and bring their own contributions in the creative process.

Cabinet Member for Climate Change, and Culture, Cllr Louise Westbury, said: “The Council is delighted that some of our care home residents had the opportunity to get involved in such an inspirational and creative project and I would like to thank Orchestras Live and Manchester Camerata for allowing us to offer them this experience. We hope the residents enjoyed the workshops, and I'm sure the audience will witness a truly special performance."

Sarah Derbyshire, Chief Executive, Orchestras Live said: “Orchestras Live are delighted to be celebrating our new partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Council at the culmination of our first project, Together in Music. Sharing and creating music together is a powerful way to support wellbeing and social connection, and I can't think of a better time to highlight this than in Jubilee Week.  We're excited to hear the world premiere of the 'The Woman of Our Time' created by Janet Fulton, percussionist with Manchester Camerata, and the residents of four local care settings.  We hope this will be the first of many new pieces of music created with communities in Redcar and Cleveland."

The concert will take place on Wednesday, 1 June, at 2pm at TunedIn! Tickets can be purchased here.
