Major road works to improve A171 Swan’s Corner Roundabout are complete

Motorists should notice a big improvement to traffic following large-scale improvement works at the A171 Swan’s Corner Roundabout in the Nunthorpe area.

The scheme, which began in March 2022, was completed at the weekend. The highway works were designed to improve existing journey times, reduce congestion and accommodate future traffic growth.

They have involved removing the old roundabout and replacing it with a lozenge-shaped central island as well as widening approach roads and installing pedestrian crossing facilities.

Councillor Cliff Foggo, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “These improvements have been designed to improve traffic flow for many years to come and this is a major gain. It’s taken a long time but it is worth it and we know people are already seeing the benefit. I’d like to thank the vast majority of motorists for their patience but, more importantly, helping ensure the safety of pedestrians, construction workers and other motorists while work was ongoing.”

Local contractor, Esh Construction, was appointed to deliver the scheme earlier this year. Alan Croft, Construction Manager within Esh Construction’s civil engineering division, said: “We are delighted to have successfully completed the highway improvement works at the A171 Swan’s Corner roundabout.

“The scheme presented its own challenges due to the location and complexity of the works. However, our phased approach to the works reduced disruption to those affected with traffic flows and pedestrian routes being maintained throughout the scheme. We worked closely with the local residents, businesses and the Nunthorpe Academy to ensure all those immediately affected by the works were kept up to date throughout the scheme and disruption was minimised where possible.”

Funding has been provided by the Department for Transport with a contribution from the authority.
