Annual Armed Forces Day event returns with a BANG!

THIS year’s Armed Forces Day in Redcar and Cleveland is set to be the loudest one yet.

A live firing demonstration of various infantry weapons, including pistols, rifles, machine guns and mortars means there will be very loud bangs and booms, firing and smoke.

Taking place on Saturday 24 June on Redcar High Street, the day will officially open at 10.15am with a parade of military personnel, both past and present.

The North-East based re-enactment group Whizz Bangs/Sounds of the Battlefield will be carrying out the firing demonstration covering the British and American World War II era. There will also be numerous static displays of weapons and military vehicles.

The display will last approximately 35 minutes so parents and dog-owners should be aware.

The iconic Spitfire will be seen in the skies for a fly past during the late afternoon and military memorabilia from Kirkleatham Museum will be on display.

Entertainment has been organised throughout the day for people of all ages, with music and singers, cadet drill displays and children’s activities such as a climbing wall and mobile cave.

Refreshments will be on offer and local charities and groups will have stalls along the High Street.

The event, which concludes at 4pm, is organised by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council in partnership with Royal British Legion Redcar Branch and Rotary Club.

Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Cllr Malcolm Head said:

“This year’s Armed Forces Day is going to be absolutely fantastic, and we want as many people as possible to come along to celebrate the incredible men and women in our Armed Forces, veterans, cadets and serving families.

“It’s going to be a very loud event with the firing demonstration, so we’re trying to make people aware. You may want to bring some ear plugs!”

Eric Howden BEM, Chairman of Redcar Branch Royal British Legion, said:

Once again we hope to draw attention to our Armed Forces, past, present and future here in Redcar. This is the 18th year that Redcar Branch, Royal British Legion has been involved with drawing the public attention to our Armed Forces, we look forward to another great day.”
