Guisborough businesses invited to apply for grant funding

Guisborough businesses may be eligible for funding to help improve their shop fronts and premises.

Thanks to money from the Levelling Up Fund, this commercial grant scheme administered via Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council will help bring buildings back in line with heritage standards. This means improvements could be made to windows, doors, facades, shop frontage and signage and decoration all designed to similar traditional appearances.

The businesses eligible are those situated on Westgate, Bakehouse Square, Chaloner Street, Chaloner Mews, Market Place, Bow Street and Fountain Street.

If a business owner is thinking of applying, match funding will be required which means owners are expected to put forward some of their own investment in addition to what they’ll receive from the Levelling Up Fund.

The Levelling Up Fund has granted a total of £15million for the regeneration of Guisborough Town Centre with improvement works proposed for Westgate, Bakehouse Square and Chaloner Street, as well as improvements to Chapel Beck, King George V Playing Field and Guisborough Forest and Walkway Centre.

The Commercial Grant Scheme will come out of this pot of money, as well as the provision of a new sustainable active travel route (cycling and walking) from Guisborough to Nunthorpe via the Guisborough Forest and Walkway Centre.

Councillor Lynn Pallister, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “This is a unique opportunity for eligible business owners to improve their shop fronts which will enhance the High Street making it a more beautiful place for people to visit and spend time. This will bring about economic benefits to their business, and hopefully encourage more independent businesses to open in the area.

“As a Council, we want to work closely with local businesses to give them the best possible opportunity to improve the look and feel of their shops. We have formed a Regeneration Steering Group, which is made up of a cross section of local people, to help us continue our engagement with the community.”
