REDCAR & Cleveland Borough Council is working jointly with the Board of Trustees at Ann Charlton Lodge care home in Redcar, to ensure the home stays open.
Ann Charlton Lodge is a 25-bedded home which was recently facing closure however this decision has been reversed and the home will be staying open.
The Board of Trustees receive no recompense for their time or expertise in managing this not-for-profit care home, and the Council will be working jointly with the Trustees providing advice and support to ensure Ann Charlton Lodge remains sustainable for the long term.
The Lodge opened in 1992 to provide high quality nursing care for residents with life limiting illnesses and is a valuable resource for its residents and their families.
Ann Charlton MBE was a long-term sufferer of multiple sclerosis and devoted her final years to raise funds to build the residential care home which is named in her honour and memory.
The care home offers long term nursing care and short-term respite care and is believed to be unique in Britain, being the only such home run by an independent charity.
Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Cllr Alec Brown, said:
“As Leader of the Council I am committed to the sustainability of residential care in the borough and ensuring that people are not forced outside of the area for their care.
“Ann Charlton Lodge is rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission and is a much needed and valued part of our community which is why it was so important that the Council supports this valuable resource to ensure its future.
“I know that the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Lodge will have been unsettling and upsetting for both residents and their friends and family and I hope this support by the Council helps provide some reassurance about its future.”
Alison Barnes, Chair of Trustees for Ann Charlton Lodge, added:
“We are delighted that Ann Charlton Lodge will remain open for our residents, and we are committed to securing the long-term future of the Lodge.
“We are looking forward to working jointly with the Council to ensure we have robust sustainability plans in place to safeguard this wonderful home at the heart of our community.”
