Mission is paws-ible! Quest for Redcar and Cleveland to become North-East’s most dog-friendly district continues

Redcar and Cleveland is becoming even more dog-friendly with more cafes, restaurants, venues – and even a cinema – becoming dog friendly.

Now special ‘dog friendly’ stickers are to be distributed to venues across the borough highlighting all the places visitors can enjoy while taking their dogs.

The Council has been promoting all the venues, including guest houses and hotels – which are dog friendly on a dedicated website for the last year and has had a big response from both businesses and the public.

The number of dog friendly venues in our borough has increased from 53 last year to 103 listed on the Council website now.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Carrie Richardson, has three dogs herself and said that dog-ownership increased by 20 per cent in the pandemic years, meaning there was even more need for dog-friendly venues.

Speaking as she enjoyed a coffee with her dog, Britney, at Kirkleatham Walled Gardens, Cllr Richardson confirmed the authority is committed to making the area even more welcoming to dogs and their owners.

Cllr Richardson said:

“It’s gone dog crazy since we began pushing this. We have hairdressers where you can take your dog as you get your hair done. Even our cinema in Redcar, The Regent, is dog friendly and I often pop in the café there walking the dogs myself. There is a serious side to all this. We know that dog owners often taken this into consideration when planning a visit to the country and beach or a weekend away and we want to make sure they’re very welcome here.”
