MONDAY, 27 January, marks the National Holocaust Memorial Day and residents of Redcar and Cleveland are invited to commemorate the fallen and pay tribute to those who survived during a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Neil Bendelow, in Redcar’s Garden of Remembrance.
The ceremony will commence at 10am, involving a speech from the Mayor, Prayers by the Reverend Rebecca Haughty, Vicar of Coatham and Dormanstown, poem readings, Statement of Commitment, a last post and silence and laying of flowers.
The Mayor, Cllr Neil Bendelow, said: “On this day, we are reminded of the devastating impact of hatred, discrimination and prejudice throughout history. It is a time for reflection, education, and unity, so we can make sure that the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides are never forgotten.
“I would like to invite all residents to join us at this ceremony to honour the memory of those who suffered and reaffirm our commitment to building a future founded on compassion and respect for all.”
The Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, Cllr Alec Brown, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is not just a day of remembrance, it is a call to action. It urges each of us to learn from the past and to stand against prejudice and injustice in all its forms. It is a day to honour the courage of those who faced unimaginable horrors and commit ourselves to creating a world where such atrocities are never repeated.”
