Teesside Veterans Invited to Join 'Super Sunday' Walk for Camaraderie and Support

VETERANS from across Teesside are encouraged to take part in the Super Sunday Veterans Walk on Sunday, 19 January.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Dave Taylor, is a collaboration with the East Cleveland Veterans Group and the Light Dragoons Peer Support Group—an organisation formed by former Light Dragoon soldiers dedicated to supporting fellow veterans.

The walk will cover 12 miles, starting at 10am from the Redcar Remembrance Garden and concluding at The Last Post Bar and Museum, located near Thornaby train station. Participants who prefer a shorter route can join the group at South Bank Station for a 7-mile walk or at the Riverside Stadium for a 4-mile stretch.

After the walk, participants are invited to gather at The Last Post Bar and Museum for refreshments, including tea, coffee, and a meal generously provided by the bar’s owner, Julie Cooper. Those unable to participate in the walk are welcome to join the gathering at 2.30pm for the meal.

The event offers a valuable opportunity for veterans to connect, socialise, and support one another while promoting physical and mental well-being.

Cllr Dave Taylor, Ward Member for Eston, said: “As a veteran myself, it is an honour to serve as the Armed Forces Champion and ensure that those who served our country receive the support and recognition they deserve. With Monday, 20 January, often referred to as ‘Blue Monday,’ I wanted to create a positive, engaging event to bring veterans together for camaraderie and support. It’s a chance to connect while improving fitness.”

“I would also like to extend my gratitude to John Martin of the East Cleveland Veterans Group for his contributions setting up the event and for hosting the Veterans Breakfast at Victoria Pub in Saltburn, taking place on the second Saturday of each month. This group offers tremendous support to the veterans in our area.”

Cllr Alec Brown, Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, said: “This event is truly admirable, and I hope it will draw a strong turnout. The Council remains committed to working with Cllr Taylor to build on our existing silver standard arrangements supporting veterans, with the goal of achieving Armed Forces Covenant Gold Status and enhancing the services we offer.”

Veterans are encouraged to attend this special day to celebrate camaraderie, enjoy a shared journey, and strengthen the bonds within the community. For more information and to register your interest, please visit the Facebook event page at (2) Super sunday Veterans walk | Facebook
