The historic environment embraces all our historic surroundings but is not just about the past, it is also about the present and the future. It can contribute to our quality of life by giving people a sense of place and identity.
The historic environment is legally protected by conservation area designations, listing of buildings and scheduling of ancient monuments, although just because some historic sites or buildings may not be legally designated that does not automatically mean that they are not important.
