Information about everything we recycle.

A

Aerosols – You can recycle empty aerosol cans in your blue bin at home.  

Aluminium Cans – You can recycle aluminium cans in your blue bin at home, to save space in your bin – wash and squash.

Aluminium Foil – You can recycle clean aluminium foil in your blue bin at home. Please note: this cannot be recycled if it is contaminated with food or grease.

Asbestos – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Ashes – Cold ashes, double bagged, can be put in your household waste bin; however, hot ashes could cause a fire.

B

Batteries – You can take small batteries, lithium batteries or items containing batteries to a local WEEE disposal bank, check our map to find your local bank.

DO NOT: put any electrical items in your bins as these can cause fires. Small batteries can also be recycled at your Local Library – check our map to find your local library.

Larger batteries, including car batteries, can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Bedding – This cannot currently be recycled, please put this in your household waste bin or take the items to the Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Birthday Cards & Greetings Cards – These can be put in your blue bin if they do not contain glitter and all foil/film has been removed.

Books – Before thinking about recycling books, why not donate them to your local charity shop or local library? If not, these can be put in your blue bin.

Bottles – Both glass and plastic bottles can be recycled and can be placed in your blue recycling bin. This includes bottle lids which are helpful to be left on top of the bottles to make them easier to process.

Bricks/Rubble/Ceramics/Tiles – Includes sinks, toilets, and washbasins. These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Brochures – These can be put in your blue bin.

Bubble Wrap – This cannot currently be recycled, please put this in your household waste bin. Alternatively, your local supermarket may have an option to recycle bubble wrap.

Building Waste Materials – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Bulky Household Items – Consider donating your bulky household items to a local charity. You can take these to Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Alternatively, we offer a bulky waste collection service to residents, find more about bulky waste collections.

C

Car Batteries – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Cardboard – Clean and dry cardboard can be placed in your blue recycling bin as long as it is not contaminated with food residue, dirt, paint, or grease.

Carpet – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip. or collected via our Bulky Waste Collection service, find out more about bulky waste collections.

Carrier Bags – These cannot currently be recycled by us, please put this in your household waste bin. Alternatively, your local supermarket may have an option to recycle carrier bags.

Clingfilm – This cannot currently be recycled by us, please put this in your household waste bin. Alternatively, your local supermarket may have an option to recycle clingfilm.

Clothes – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Commercial Waste – We offer a commercial waste disposal service for businesses; find out more information about our Trade Waste service

Computers & Monitors – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Copper – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Crisp Packets – These cannot currently be recycled by us, please put this in your household waste bin. Alternatively, your local supermarket may have an option to recycle crisp packets.

D

DVDs – Please do not put these in your blue recycling bin. Consider donating these to your local charity, or alternatively, these can be put in your Household Waste Bin or recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Egg Cartons – You can recycle empty egg cartons in your blue bin at home. 

Electrical Items – You can take small electrical items to local WEEE disposal banks, check our map to find your local bank.

Engine Oil – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Envelopes & Mail – These can be put in your blue bin.

Fabric – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Film Lids (Plastic) – You can recycle plastic film lids in your blue bin at home.

Food Waste – Please put food waste in your household waste bin.

Game Consoles – You can take small electrical items to local WEEE disposal banks, check our map to find your local bank

Garden Waste – Garden waste can be placed in your dark green garden bin.

Gas Bottles – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip

Glass – You can recycle most glass in your blue bin at home, this excludes Pyrex, windows, tempered glass, and light bulbs.

Hardcore/Rubble – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Hairdryers & Straighteners – You can take small electrical items to local WEEE disposal banks, check our map to find your local bank.

I

Ink Cartridges – Visit www.recyclenow.com to find your local ink cartridge drop off point.

Iron (Ferrous Metals) – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Jars (Glass) – You can recycle most glass jars in your blue bin at home.

L

Laptops – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

M

Magazines – These can be put in your blue bin.

Mattresses – These should be wrapped and can be taken to Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip. or removed via our Bulky Waste Collection service, find out more about bulky waste collections.

Medication Packets - The cardboard packet and paper insert can be recycled in your blue bin at home, they are typically scanboard which we capture through our process as a mixed paper. However, the plastic and foil packaging within are not recyclable at the moment.

Mixed Paper & Card – This can be put in your blue bin.

P

Plastics

There are different types of plastics, some of which can be added to your blue bin at home, and some cannot currently be recycled:

Recycle in your blue bin at home

1 - PET, used for drinks bottles and some food packaging: Widely recycled

2 - HDPE, used for cleaning product bottles, milk cartons, etc: Widely recycled

5 - PP, used for some tubs and trays etc: Widely recycled

3 - PVC, used for car parts, window fittings, etc: Not easily recyclable

Recycle at a specialist point

4 - LDPE, used for plastic bags and wrapping, etc: Recycle at specialist points

7 - Other, used for crisp packets, rice packets etc: Recycle at specialist points

Put in your household waste bin

6 - PS, used for takeaway boxes, disposable cutlery, etc: Not easily recyclable

Paper Coffee Cups – You can recycle empty paper coffee cups in your blue bin at home. 

Plasterboard – This can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Polystyrene – This cannot currently be recycled, please put this in your household waste bin.

Pyrex Glass – This cannot be recycled, please put this in your household waste bin.

Scrap Metals – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip

Soil – Soil cannot be disposed of in any of your bins at home, but it can be taken in bags to  Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Solvents – If not in their original container, these must be labelled to accurately describe their contents and can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

T

Textiles – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

Televisions – These can be taken at the Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip. or removed via our Bulky Waste Collection service, find out more about bulky waste collections.

Tyres – These can be recycled at Dunsdale Tip, find out more information about the tip.

W

WEEE (Electrical Equipment) – You can take small electrical items to local WEEE disposal banks, check our map to find your local bank.
