A firm favourite with runners and spectators alike, Redcar's Running Festival returns to the town this weekend, featuring the Everyone Active Redcar Half Marathon, the Zetland 10k, Beacon 5k and the 2k Fun Run.
Taking place on Sunday 10 October and organised by the Council in partnership with Everyone Active and New Marske Harriers, this flat, fast and traffic-free route is increasingly popular with runners of all abilities, from across the region.
This year's races start from Zetland Park, with the half marathon taking place over a spectator-friendly, two-loop course of the Coast Road and Esplanade.
The action gets underway from 9am, with the full programme as follows:
- 9am - 2km Fun Run
- 9:10 – Beacon 5k
- 9:25 - Wheelchair 10k
- 10am – Zetland 10k
- 10:10 - Half Marathon
“The Running Festival is one of our borough's most popular sporting events and we're looking forward to welcoming competitors and plenty of spectators to cheer them on," said Councillor Louise Westbury, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Events and Culture.
“It's especially pleasing after 2020 saw cancellations of many of our planned events due to the Covid measures that were in place at the time. As we enter winter, it's particularly important that we continue to look after ourselves and each other by following Government advice on isolating if you have symptoms, hand washing, keeping a distance and respecting people's right to wear masks, so that we can continue with life and events such as these as normally as possible."
Race car parking will be available at Redcar Racecourse and will be open from 7:30am on the morning of the festival.
To ensure the complete safety of competitors, a traffic management scheme will be in operation from 8am on Sunday and will involve road closures along the Coast Road and Esplanade. Some bus services may also be suspended; residents are asked to please check bus timetables prior to travel.
