The full force of Storm Christoph was felt across the borough last night as residents of a Loftus street came close to being evacuated due to the flooding.
The Council and Emergency services were called out to East Crescent, Loftus when the street turned into a river due to the heavy rain and the downstairs of some of the properties were flooded.
The storm has caused significant disruption to motorists in the area with a number of routes across the borough being closed due to flooding.
Cllr Barry Hunt, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Environment at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said:
“The Council along with its partners are doing all we can to get things back to normal across the borough.
“I would like to thank all of our staff including our highways and neighbourhood teams who worked tirelessly throughout the night clearing gulley's, sand bagging and pumping water away from areas affected by the flooding.
“Officers not on duty have been volunteering their services and highways teams will be out and about throughout the day dealing with the flood water.
“Please only travel if it is essential and take extra care and time as there will still be some standing water in some parts.
“We will be continuing to monitor the situation and will update our website and social media channels with the latest information."
For residents who are due to have their bin collected today, please keep your bin out. However, there is a significant possibility that bin collections could be delayed.
Kirkleatham Hall School will also be closed today due to the weather and travel disruption in the area. Parents and carers are advised to check the school website later today for more information about the opening of the school tomorrow.
Locke Park in Redcar has also been closed as a result of the very high-water levels and flooding which could pose a risk to the public.
