The Council’s Registrars Team will create a dream wedding at Kirkleatham Walled Garden

Couples in Redcar and Cleveland getting married or forming a civil partnership through the Council’s team at the Register Office, can now have their wedding or civil partnership ceremonies held in the stunning grounds of Kirkleatham Walled Gardens.

The venue will see its first ceremony organised by Registrars in September 2023, when Michelle Butler and her fiancé Chris Boughen will get married in the spectacular Turner Pavilion. The two got engaged in May 2022 in Benidorm. Together they have a 2-year-old son, Ollie, while Chris also has a 6-year-old boy named Theo who will be the couple’s ring bearer at the ceremony.

The couple have the entire grounds of the Gardens booked for the full day of their wedding, including the Glass House. With all the major elements set in place, they are very excited to see their vision for the ceremony coming together.

Michelle said:

“We are so excited to have our wedding at the Walled Gardens. It was a family member who recommended this place and when we came to see it, we fell in love with it. We can’t wait for the big day. We’ve always been guests at weddings and now it’s our turn.”

“We would like to thank Barbara and Dawn from the Register Office and Rebecca from Kirkleatham Walled Garden for all the help, guidance and reassurance they offered us during the process.”

Michelle and Chris have been supported in organising this significant event by the Council’s Registrars Team. From day one when the bride and groom booked their wedding day, approximately six months ago, the team have been by their side, working with them and guiding them through the entire process.

The team have recently added Kirkleatham Walled Garden on their list of locations licenced for marriages and civil partnerships and are looking forward to support Michelle and Chris in creating the perfect wedding ceremony for them.

Barbara Schweitzer, a Civil Registration Officer at the Council, said:

“We are very excited to be able to do this wedding. Every wedding or civil partnership is unique, and every couple have their own vision of what their ceremony should look like - our team are here to make that magic happen for them.”

Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources, Christopher Massey, said:

"Our Registrars Team are committed to help any couple make their vision come true. Last year the Team covered around 400 ceremonies, including ceremonies for couples living in the region alongside even former residents now living abroad who returned to their roots to celebrate in Redcar and Cleveland surrounded by their friends and families.

“The Team will always provide a professional, but also personal and tailored service to every couple, whether it is for a traditional wedding, civil partnership or a non-traditional ceremony”.
