Redcar and Cleveland gets saddled up for National Road Championships

The best of British Cycling will be taking to the streets of Redcar and Cleveland next week, with the 1km circuit race taking place in Redcar on Friday 23 June, followed closely by the longer and more technical road race starting and finishing in Saltburn on Sunday 25 June.

To help residents and visitors get the most out of the action-packed weekend we have pulled together all the key spectator and broadcast information.

Circuit races

The circuit races take place on Friday, 23rd June. They will be held on a tight and technical 1km circuit around Redcar, starting on the Esplanade and heading down the High Street. Both the men's and women's races will last for 55 minutes.

The women's race will take place from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, followed closely by the men's race from 8pm to 9pm.

There will be ample space along the route for spectators to get in on the excitement.

Getting there

Visitors are encouraged to use alternative transport if possible. Cycling is a great option, or you can opt for public transport through Connect Tees Valley, which offers quick and easy travel planning.

If you prefer to drive, don't worry! Spectator parking will be well signposted. You can park at the Civic Centre, Seafield House, or Majuba Road, all of which are free after 6pm. These parking locations are just a 5 to 10 minute walk from the start/finish line.

What else is happening?

From community balance bike sessions to arts workshops, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to the amazing cyclists, we have a special treat for foodies. The Spoke Market, a one-off food market, will showcase the best of local food and drinks. You can also enjoy live music from local musicians and festival favourites Groove Inc. If you're a cycling enthusiast, make sure to check out Dan Mather's Pop-up screen printing station.

Road closures

A full road closure will be in place. This means the entire route will be closed to traffic. Roads affected include Redcar Esplanade, Moore Street, High Street, from Redcar Lane to Moore Street, Zetland Park roundabout to Granville Terrace, and Lord Street to Oxley Street.

Road races

On Sunday, 25 June, the road races will challenge riders with steep gradients and tight hairpin bends.

Both men and women will follow an 18.8km loop. Women will complete seven laps, covering 132km, while men will take on 10 laps, totalling 189km.

The route will pass through East Cleveland villages, Skelton Castle, old mining sites in Kilton, and the coast of Saltburn before finishing at Saltburn Bank.

The women's race starts at 9am, followed by the men's race at 1.30pm. The start and finish line is located near Saltburn Bank.

There's plenty of space to catch the action! The route covers various areas of Redcar and Cleveland, allowing you to see the cyclists multiple times during the race.

Getting there

Consider cycling or using sustainable public transport via Connect Tees Valley for convenient travel planning.

If you're driving, please plan your journey carefully as there may be short delays and limited parking in Saltburn. We highly recommend arriving early, taking public transport or utilising the park and ride facility.

Park and Ride

A return park and ride facility is available for this event. Prior booking is required for each leg.

What else is happening

Road closures

Closures are in place for a short period (usually around 30 minutes) to allow – the race to pass safely. Glenside will be closed between the junction of Windsor Terrace and the junction of Albion Terrace to all unauthorised vehicle traffic from 06:00 hours on Sunday 25th June.

Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Culture, Cllr Carrie Richardson, said:

“I am thrilled that the national road championships will be taking place in Redcar and Cleveland next week and would encourage both residents and visitors to come along and see what the area and the best of British cycling has to offer.

“The event will be a fantastic spectacle and will hopefully inspire the next generation of cyclists as well as provide a boost to the local economy as the international cycling community descends on the borough.”
