Supported Internships help young people with SEND make a start on their careers

Young people from Redcar and Cleveland with Special Education Needs and Disabilities have the chance to get work experience on a work-based study programme known as Supported Internships.

To raise awareness of this scheme, Prior Pursglove College, who have successfully run supported internships for several years, held a Business Breakfast event on Wednesday, 7 June.

Employers in the area who attended the event had the opportunity to hear from the College, the young people, and local businesses about the benefits of Supported Internships.

Those aged between 16 and 24 years, who have an EHCP and are looking to get a job in the near future can take part in this 1-year programme which gives them the opportunity to grow their skills in a work environment whilst working towards qualifications and developing a strong CV.

Supported Internships are based with an employer, and the young people receive support from a job coach who helps them improve their knowledge, become more confident and feel prepared to secure a job in the future.

The programme also allows local businesses to develop their in-house talent through reliable and enthusiastic young people.

Employers can receive advice, guidance and support from the Disability Confident Employer scheme and Access to Work, more details being available at Disability Confident employer scheme - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Supported Internships are delivered across Redcar and Cleveland by Prior Pursglove College, Redcar and Cleveland College and NHS England Choices College.

Cllr Luke Myer, Cabinet Member for Children said:

“We are glad to be able to support such an impactful programme which will allow young people with special education needs and disabilities to make a start on a bright career and hopefully secure long-term employment in the future. Prior Pursglove College, Redcar and Cleveland College and NHS England Choices College have done an impressive job in supporting these young people throughout their programme and ensuring they had a positive outcome.

“We are encouraging other local employers to get involved in this programme. They will not only help a young person to develop their skills and confidence, but it will also be an opportunity to add new talent to their organisation’s workforce.”

Paul Richter, Liaison Manager at Prior Pursglove College said:

“The 'Endeavour Faculty' at Prior Pursglove College have run Supported Internships for over 10 years seeing 60% of young people move into paid employment. We couldn't have done it without the support of Redcar & Cleveland Council, Partner Schools, College Staff and most importantly the amazing students and their families.”
