RESIDENTS in Redcar and Cleveland can now sign up to get their garden bin emptied in 2024 by visiting www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/garden-waste-signup
The opt-in service, which will come into effect in April, will cost £40.00 for one garden waste bin to be collected fortnightly between April and November and £20.00 for each additional bin, up to a maximum of five.
Residents who have not already signed up for a customer portal account with the council will be prompted to do so.
Collection days for garden waste may not be the same as the current one. A permit and further information on a collection day will be provided at least seven days before first collection.
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Cllr Adam Brook, explained:
“The council agreed to the garden waste subscription service last year to ensure that the service remained sustainable and will only be paid for by those households that choose to use it.
“Over 70% of local authorities across the UK have already made the decision to introduce chargeable garden waste collections amidst rising budget pressures.
“The average price nationally for an annual garden waste subscription is £51.00 so at £40.00 per year we have attempted to keep the garden waste charge affordable to residents and competitively priced with other local authorities.”
The types of garden waste collected include grass and hedge clippings, leaves, plants and flowers, twigs, sticks and small branches, weeds (but not Japanese knotweed).
